PRIVATE SCHOOLS & SPECIALIZED PROGRAMS

Private colleges and universities, and private career schools provide a significant amount of education and training opportunities for Oregonians in many diverse fields.  Any person or organization that trains individuals for,  and seeks to offer certificates or confer degree’s must be authorized by the Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC).

The Office of Private Postsecondary Education under the Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) oversees the Office of Degree Authorization, the Private Career Schools Unit, and the Oregon State Approving Agency (VA-SAA).

Private Colleges and Universities, and Out-of-State Distance Education

The Office of Degree Authorization (ODA) is responsible for ensuring the quality of in-state private colleges, and out of state private and public higher distance education programs offered to Oregon students.  The ODA also coordinates for the Commission (HECC) the implementation of SARA – State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement.  The ODA conducts school site visits, approves instructors, responds to requests for information and investigates complaints.

Private Career Schools

The Private Career Schools unit (PCS) is responsible for ensuring the quality of the 198+ private career schools that are licensed to operate in Oregon, some of the schools are located outside of the state but recruit, market and/or offer distance education to Oregonians. The PCS unit conducts school site visits, approves instructors, responds to requests for information and investigates complaints about private career schools.
